Buying a dog is a major life decision. Once you commit to bringing a dog into your home, you are responsible for the care and feeding for the next decade of an animal that is totally dependent on you. Deciding to buy or rescue a puppy or adult dog is certainly a task worthy of much research.  Different breeds of dogs have different personalities and are suited to different types of households. The American Kennel Club offers some excellent advice on buying a puppy that merits outlining here.

Finding Puppy Breeders Near Me

When buying a puppy, choosing a breeder can be a daunting task if you don’t know what to look for or the questions to ask. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends that you start by researching Responsible Breeders because a true Breeder of Pure Bred Dogs knows what physical and emotional traits you can expect from that breed and that Dam and Sire.

Many organizations can give you a list of ‘Registered Breeders’.  Many of those organizations develop those registries to make a profit.  The American Kennel Club is a non-profit organization that has been working with pure-bred dogs since 1884.  The AKC does not sell puppies.  The AKC does a lot of very good work keeping track of lineages, conducting kennel inspections, organizing the pure-bred dog world and is an advocate for dogs in general.

You don’t always need to buy a puppy to get the canine traits that fit in your household.  There are many rescues of many different breeds and a good place to start is at the AKC Rescue Network.  If you are interested in buying an adult or puppy, the AKC Breeder Referral Search and AKC Puppy Finder are very good resources.

How to Decide Between Purebred and Mixed Breed

Your new dog can come from a lot of sources. There are many very good reasons to rescue mixed breed dogs and equally good reasons to buy a pure-bred puppy. Many rescue dogs are put to sleep each day and deserve a happy home. At the same time, an adult or puppy will not have a happy home if its personality, size and temperament are not a good fit for that household. The difference is thatyou can predict a pure-bred dog’s physical and emotional qualities more reliably than a mixed-breed. We will write an article in the future about how to pick a rescue dog that should be a good fit for your household.

Why and How To Get Your Puppy Registered

The  American Kennel Club (AKC) and United Kennel Club (UKC) are a couple of the oldest and most reputable dog registries in the world. The AKC lists a bunch of reasons to register your Pure-Bred puppy at Why Register Your Purebred Dog. A few of the important ones are:

  1. Kennel Inspections
  2. AKC Canine Health Foundation
  3. Canine Good Citizen programs
  4. American Kennel Club sports

By registering your puppy with the AKC you become part of an association that provides tons of resources about training and care for your new dog.  Equally important, you become part of a network of people who have spent their whole lives working with dogs and working for the betterment of the canine community at large. You can start the registration process at AKC Puppy Registraion and your AKC breeder should have all the information you need to get started.
